Those Unexpected Little Treats

I loved sleeping over at Gramma's house. She had this wonderful old house built in 1901 that had been, at one time, a duplex with a shared kitchen. One of the coolest things about her house is that it has two front doors. One was not used often and entered into her living room. The second was the mainly-used door that entered into the dining room. There was a pair of sliding doors between the two rooms.  I just realized the dining room was probably the second house's living room, but Gramma used it as her dining room. Crazy what one realizes they didn't know because it was never before a thought until this minute.

Gramma's bedroom was off the living room while the kitchen was off the dining room.  They built a small little kitchen prep room off the kitchen with the sink and lots of cupboards and a lovely bathing room next to that. There was no indoor toilet until they built one off the back porch. The back porch was where the cold dark dirt cellar entrance was located.

Another best thing was the stairwell to the four bedrooms upstairs. I always slept in Dad's old room. Pat liked the room across the hallway that had tons of things in storage. But she usually slept in the room next door to me.

The stairway was really cool.  We used to climb up the stairs and bump-bottom down the steps.  We'd hold onto the ceiling wall and walk backwards up the stairs. Pat was much better at this. She could get almost horizontal to the ceiling.  She has always been much braver than I am. Heck, at around two years old, she climbed the ladder up to Mr. Cooper's barn loft. Me at age 8 or so...I couldn't skate without hanging onto something. Mom and Dad met at the rollerskating rink and I was fearful for many years I would never find a husband because I couldn't skate. Anyway, Gramma's house, between the large wrap-around porch to the cold semi-outdoor back porch toilet, was the best.

Gramma made the best pies. When she was finished rolling the crust, she would make these great treats out of the leftover pie dough.  Butter and sugar and cinnamon roll-ups that were the best! It wasn't until yesterday when I was going through my 1968 Betty Crocker Cookbook and found a recipe for these leftovers that I realized they weren't something Gramma made up. Crazy what one realizes they didn't know because it was never before a thought until this minute. But damn they were yummy little treats.

The other day I had leftover cake frosting and I suddenly had the urge for  frosting-filled graham crackers. Those were a yummy little treat Mom used to make if she had leftover frosting. I thought she was so clever to create such a cool little treat! I made them when my sons and I were younger...had to put them in the freezer so I wouldn't eat them all at one sitting.

Dang those little cookies were great frozen!

Well, I made them with my leftover frosting and my husband came by, stared at the cookies, and asked, "What are these things?" "Oh! The best," I said. "Graham cracker frosting cookies!" He'd never heard of them. I put them in the freezer.

I thought Mom had created these unexpected little treats herself. Of course, in looking through the Internet, I found others made them as well. Crazy what one realizes they didn't know because it was never before a thought until this minute.

But oooh I love those unexpected little treats!

And that's the way it goes.
peace~~~
